If\nuntreated, this condition can pose a serious threat to your oral health \u2013 but unfortunately,\nthat\u2019s not the only problem. More and more studies are finding a correlation\nbetween infected gums and cardiovascular disease as well as other potentially\ndevastating health issues. Here are the facts about gum disease in Chaska and\nits link to other conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Causes Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The bacteria in your mouth is constantly forming a layer of\nplaque on your teeth. Sugary or starchy foods and drinks cause the bacteria to release\nacids that wear away at the enamel. Because the plaque is so sticky, the acids\nstay on the tooth, eventually leading to decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This same plaque buildup can also cause your gums to become\ninfected; this is what\u2019s known as gum disease. The earliest stage is gingivitis,\nwhich causes tenderness, swelling, and occasional bleeding. Eventually, the\ndisease advances to periodontitis, at which point the gum tissue will pull away\nfrom the teeth, allowing the bacteria to attack the bones and eventually\ncausing tooth loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do Infected Gums Affect My Overall Health?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of several\nserious health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. These connections\nare often attributed to the bacteria and inflammation that an oral infection usually\ninvolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, many researchers believe that bacteria in the\ngums enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation in the vessels, leading to\nblood clots, heart attacks and stroke. Similarly, signs of oral bacteria have\nbeen found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer\u2019s, the most common form of\ndementia. There\u2019s also findings that suggest periodontitis can affect blood\nsugar control, which means it could exacerbate the effects of diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that many of the risk factors for gum\ndisease \u2013 poor eating habits, smoking, lack of overall attention to health \u2013 are\nalso linked to these health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Should I Do if I Have Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you or your dentist find the signs of an infection in the\ngums, you may need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaskadentist.com\/periodontal-therapy.html\">periodontal\ntherapy<\/a> in Chaska. The necessary treatment will depend on the severity of\nthe disease.
